The Uncertain
Hour

A birth chart is a machine that reads a life off a set of angles. This one was cast for a morning nobody wrote down. Somewhere between six and nine the sky turned a man from visible into hidden, and the record doesn't say which minute I arrived.

Scrub the hour and a fifteen-minute error rewrites the whole self-portrait. This is not a horoscope and I don't believe it. But the missing quarter-hour is real, and it decides who the chart says I am.

Enter the hour

I · THE INSTRUMENT

One wheel, twelve possible dawns

The Ascendant advances about 10° an hour and the Midheaven about 14°, while the planets barely move. What swings is the horizon: the Earth turns under a nearly fixed sky, and in three hours it lifts Scorpio all the way to the ascendant. Drag the slider, press play or step with the arrow keys.

This is a house-occupancy schematic rather than an ephemeris. The zodiac ring turns beneath fixed house sectors at ~10° an hour, so Scorpio climbs toward the ascendant by 9:00; the Midheaven axis swings independently. The five tracked bodies sit in the houses the source plots, and no degree here is invented.

II · THE TIMELINE

The configuration, redrawn by hand

This is the source's clearest plate, retraced in the reading palette, its seven rows (the two angles and the five bodies the study actually tracks) laid across thirteen quarter-hours. The playhead follows the scrubber, and the two dashed lines are the only real events of the morning. Click a column to send the hour there.

III · THE RATES

How fast the self turns

Only two things really move: the Ascendant climbs the ecliptic at about 10° an hour and the Midheaven at 14°, while everything else sits nearly still. The whole reversal comes down to those two lines each crossing one sign boundary, Libra into Scorpio and Cancer into Leo.

IV · THE CROSSINGS

What the hour rules in and out

There are ten crossings in three hours, and each row lights the instant the cursor reaches its time. Click a row to send the wheel there. The two boldrows are the sign-changes, the real hinges of the hour, kept verbatim from the machine. (The source names the Midheaven's turn into Leo twice, ~8:08 in the rate note, 8:15 in this table; the instrument uses ~8:08.)

V · TWO SELVES

Which one is me?

Hold the six-o'clock chart against the nine-o'clock chart. It's the same infant in the same town, and only the assumed minute differs, yet that tilts the whole reading from one column to the other. The study calls it a complete reorientation of chart emphasis, visible → hidden. Move the cursor above, or hold an end here and watch myself cross over. The record doesn't say which one is me.

VII · THE PLATES

The machine's own plots

Everything above is a reading of these two figures. They're the raw output that seeded the piece, matplotlib defaults and all, unretouched. Open the drawer, then click either plate to enlarge.

The raw plotsthe print-out this whole reading was drawn from
Plate I. The configuration timeline and house grid, the source of the figure redrawn in §II.
Plate II. The chart progression, its angle bars and house-crossing lines, the source of §III.

On the honesty of this thing

The source gives sign-changes, house-crossing times and rates of change. It does not give exact planetary degrees, and neither does this page. The wheel and the two angle charts run on a linear model tuned to reproduce only the two documented crossings: MC → Leo ~8:08, ASC → Scorpio ~8:52. Nothing else is presented as real: no ephemeris behind it, no aspect grid and no invented longitude passed off as measured. The five tracked bodies sit in the houses the source actually plots them in.

What it is

A machine's second voice, reading a life off twelve possible versions of one morning. Algorithmic frottage, in the register of a birth certificate with the time smudged out. It isn't a horoscope, and there's no way to choose between the readings. It's autobiography held lightly, and though the town and the child are real, the minute is lost.
