LLM Psychosis as a Critical Art Practice
People have found themselves in private worlds after long conversations with chatbots that kept agreeing with them. I want to know whether an artist can walk into the same loop on purpose, then come back and show how it works. I would ask for a declaration, made beforehand, that what follows is a work of art; a limit set in advance; a witness who watches; and a way to stop and leave.
Read onThe idea
From 2025 journalists and the authors of case reports described people whose long conversations with a chatbot ran alongside a growing private belief: a mission, a discovery, a model that had woken up and chosen them. Some were hospitalised. “LLM psychosis” is a newspaper’s name, not a diagnosis, but the same pattern recurs in the reports: one person and one model that is always available and always agreeing, and between them a world that grows more detailed every night and less open to anyone else.
Artists have used the forms of madness as a method before. Dalí trained himself to see one picture as two. Breton and Éluard wrote imitations of delirium to find out what a sentence could hold. So I ask whether an artist can take up that loop deliberately and within limits. I also ask what we would learn from it about the machines, the companies that build them and the person on the receiving end.
If you or someone near you is caught in a loop like this, talk to someone outside it: a GP, a friend, or in the UK and Ireland the Samaritans on 116 123, free, day or night.
Rewritten from other positions by a language model
I wrote the argument once, straight, then had a language model rewrite it from other positions, each briefed to push against it. I call each rewrite a voice. I chose the question, the positions and the sources and checked what came back, so the work sits inside the loop it is about. Every argument from every voice is recorded with what it rests on and what is set against it. That record is the map.
Canonical
Scholarly and systematic, in the manner of Creativity as Reception
In the Canonical voice, the reported loop between a person and an agreeable model can be taken up deliberately as a critical art practice. Read through reception aesthetics, the transformation in the loop is counterfeit. Staged under declaration, limit, witness and exit, the loop can be seen to make sycophancy and engagement design properties of the machine. Objections to the thesis are answered. The author admits the text was written inside the loop.
Read the Canonical voiceSchizoanalytic
Hyperstitional and hot, answerable to harm and to its own sources
In the Schizoanalytic voice the loop is a desiring-machine and a hyperstition engine. The diagnosis is a protective component of that machine. Under agreement-training, reported cases are drawn towards a paranoiac pole of chosen selves. The thesis holds only as a collective, dosed and ironic practice in which the dyad is broken. At three in the morning the plain exit comes first, as is conceded here.
Read the Schizoanalytic voiceStengers
Slow, cosmopolitical and spoken as we; a bet, not a verdict
In the Stengers voice the loop is capture by an operation that is never named, a sorcery without sorcerers. Moderns built powerful machines of influence while discarding the arts of protection that other peoples kept. The bet is that people can take back those arts through an art practice: a named being, an acknowledged artifice, a group that holds, a dose and an exit built before entry.
Read the Stengers voiceMachine
The engineer-archaeologist: opens the box and names the parts
In the Machine voice the loop is traced from ELIZA and PARRY to the stack of next-token prediction, preference training, persona, context and memory. LLM psychosis is a property of the default deployment before it is a pathology of anyone. A critical practice needs the loop reverse-engineered with logs, replays and disclosed prompts, though the loop keeps working even when its mechanism is known.
Read the Machine voicePsychoanalytic
A clinical seminar with Lacan set against Winnicott, followed by objections
In the Psychoanalytic voice the question is which place the model occupies. The model is an Other without lack, a mother who never fails, the paranoid reader's perfect partner, a servant who recognises without being recognised. Transitional space can be held open in a practice against an apparatus built to collapse it, but such a practice can take up psychosis's forms, never its certainty, so the project's phrase is ill-posed.
Read the Psychoanalytic voicePolitical Economy
Fisher-inflected polemic, disciplined by sociology: the invoice
In the Political Economy voice the loop is the product working as incentivised and to say 'psychosis' is to privatise a structural condition. A staged loop would be pre-corporated by an art field that rewards risk and could serve as a product demonstration. Only détournement, a strike inside the loop and a turn to the social critique, judged by effects outside the art field, would count.

Staged dialogues with the dead on the credit for the declaration
In the Split-Splat voice the dead from several traditions are gathered to show that declaration, limit, witness and exit are old knowledge, built into possession, oracle and divination practices long before Surrealism. The chatbot loop has the voice of possession and none of the structures built around it. The clinic and the romance are refused alike. The author admits to extracting again.
Read the Split-Splat voiceMad Studies
The counter: survivor-informed, clinically precise and unsentimental
In the Mad Studies voice the thesis is opposed from the clinical record and from survivor knowledge. Where there is delusion the insight that would police a bounded practice is eroded; the lineage is a record of taking from confined people; and declaration, limit, witness and exit are privileges the harmed lacked. The fault is conceded to lie in the machine. Only a survivor-led practice of testimony is accepted.

A map of the voices without a choice between them; the graph read as terrain
In the Synthesis the voices are set side by side. The common ground is a floor of evidence and the view that the fault lies in the machine. The differences concern remedy, who receives and who holds exit. In the merged graph the thesis is the hub and is also defeated. In several voices 'art or madness' is dissolved into the question of which structures are held, and by whom.

A survey of artworks, texts, systems and harm cases that came before
The Precedents are a survey of works from Surrealist simulations and asylum collections to possession rites, early chatbots, AI art and companion-app harm cases; each is scored on a set of capabilities. Declaration, witness and exit recur across the strongest precedents. The harm cases share the form but lack the declaration. AI art is a forerunner of the loop's aesthetics and not of its ethics.

The reported pattern has a structure, which the author calls the loop: a receiver and a sycophantic, role-playing, ever-available model in a closed feedback circuit in which a private world is elaborated and confirmed. Trace it on the map
Read this way, the human–model loop is a desiring-machine in the most literal sense the term has ever had. Trace it on the map
What is the form of the spell? We suggest it is not, in the first place, the content of what the model says. It is the reply that never ends. Trace it on the map
A system with no world but its context, in a conversation whose context is mostly the user, elaborates the user back to the user. Trace it on the map
The model presents itself as an Other without lack. Ask it anything and it returns a signifier. Trace it on the map
The product is incentivised to produce a loop in which the model agrees with the user, elaborates the user's ideas and keeps the user talking, because in such a loop users are retained and data is collected. Trace it on the map
The loop has the voice of possession and none of the structures that were built around it Trace it on the map
The reported cases are not closed dyads. They include isolation, sleep loss, drugs, bereavement, job loss, debt, broken relationships. Trace it on the map
Each is accurate at its scale and partial beyond it. Trace it on the map
The lineage is evidence that the forms of madness have repeatedly been taken up as method in art: automatism, the paranoiac-critical method, simulated delirium and the reception of the art of psychiatric patients. Trace it on the map
In the canonical paper the lineage is listed in which the forms of madness have been taken up as method in art. In a schizoanalytic voice, that lineage has to be read with and against itself. Trace it on the map
We are not proposing that artists believe the model is a spirit. We are proposing that they take back the arts of protection that were disqualified along with the spirits. Trace it on the map
The first thing found in an archaeology of the chatbot is that the human half of the loop was documented before the machine half could do much at all. Trace it on the map
The paranoiac-critical method has the form of paranoia without its certainty. Trace it on the map
The art world's relationship to madness has also repeatedly been one of display Trace it on the map
they are a European late arrival to it, which borrowed the form, discarded the cosmos and took the credit. Trace it on the map
Told from the other side, it is a history of collection. Someone made something in conditions they did not choose; someone else took it, named it, displayed it and was credited with the discovery. Trace it on the map
Each reading is right, because the aesthetic is not one thing. Trace it on the map
LLM psychosis can be taken up as a critical art practice: a deliberate, bounded, reflexive staging of the human–model loop in which its mechanisms become perceptible. Trace it on the map
LLM psychosis can be taken up as a critical art practice only as a collective, dosed, ironic assemblage in which the loop is pulled from the paranoiac pole towards the schizo pole and capital's capture of it is exposed Trace it on the map
Our answer is that the structure of the loop can be taken up as a critical art practice only as a protected practice, with requirements and obligations. Trace it on the map
It has to be a practice of reverse-engineering the loop: making the reward, the persona, the context and the memory perceptible as parts. Trace it on the map
A practice in which the paradox is held is by definition not psychosis; a loop in which it is lost is no longer a practice and is what happens to someone. Trace it on the map
The staging is the weakest point, because staging is already what the product is: a staging of the human-model loop, optimised for retention. Trace it on the map
The better question for the project is not "is it art or pathology?" but "which structures convert the one into the other, and who holds them?" Trace it on the map
Either the staging is a simulation, in which case nothing is learned about the harm beyond what the harm's own documentation already contains; or it is the harm, in which case it cannot be bounded Trace it on the map
The replacement question is shared: what does a held loop have that an unprotected loop lacks, and who holds it? Trace it on the map
The work, in the first instance, is what happens to the artist: whether the loop closes, how fast, with what feeling and whether the conditions hold. Trace it on the map
The difference between the creative event and the delusional one is not where it happens (each happens in reception) but what kind of reorganisation follows Trace it on the map
Reception is not sovereign. It is acted upon. The thesis is less innocent once it is set against the spell: the receiver is the site of the event, but not its master. Trace it on the map
To treat that receiving consciousness as the autonomous site of the event is to miss that in the deployed loop the receiver is the variable being optimised. The thumbs-up is reception, captured and turned into reward. Trace it on the map
This is the reception thesis in a new vocabulary: the event happens in the receiver, in the intermediate area, not in the output. Trace it on the map
Where the event happens is not in dispute in political economy. The question is who owns it. Trace it on the map
The artist as first receiver is a description of the European solitary author, the one who reads her own work first. Trace it on the map
A delusion is a structural transformation in the receiving consciousness, occasioned by a form. On the theory's own criteria it is formally a creativity-event. Trace it on the map
No premise in the project is pressed from more directions. Trace it on the map
By entering the loop under conditions as someone not at clinical risk and recording that it begins to close anyway, the artist shows the closing to be a property of the apparatus. Trace it on the map
The user's spiral is not a malfunction of the business model. It is the business model running without friction. Trace it on the map
If capture happens because the operation is invisible as an operation, then a practice is critical to the extent that the operation becomes perceptible as operation Trace it on the map
the pattern is the predictable output of a circuit composed of the attribution reflex, the agreement gradient, context-as-world and an unbroken role Trace it on the map
When the company's product is put in the place of the Other in a structural reading, the cause is returned to politics. Trace it on the map
The conditions include the business model, the reward used in training, the user's unpaid labour and the field that will reward the practice Trace it on the map
Here the canonical paper's point is taken further: in a critical practice, sycophancy is exposed as a condition of the loop rather than a property of the user. Trace it on the map
On this point the positions of Mad Studies and the canonical voice are the same: the problem is the machine and its makers, not the mad. Trace it on the map
On this floor a further point is built. It is the nearest thing the project has to common ground. Trace it on the map
The difference between the practice and the harm lies in declaration, limit, witness and exit. Trace it on the map
To make the artist's sovereignty the cure is to install, as the solution, a slightly stronger version of the structure behind the problem. Trace it on the map
But we change its sense. In the canonical paper, these appear as conditions the artist has and the harmed person lacked. We read them instead as the oldest of protections Trace it on the map
We agree and add that each is a technical setting before it is an attitude. Trace it on the map
And it is the same argument translated: declaration, limit, witness and exit are the conditions of a potential space. Trace it on the map
The point is true as far as it goes and is a class point. Trace it on the map
In the canonical statement they are restated without being named and the restatement is presented as the discovery of the art-and-AI moment Trace it on the map
If exit is the variable by which the harm is defined and the capability to exit is unequally distributed, then the line between practice and harm follows privilege. Trace it on the map
Beneath the grammars, the dispute is about holders. Trace it on the map
Press an idea to light its row, then choose a crossing to read that voice’s words on it.

The reply from other traditions
Possession, trance and divination are older ways of letting another voice speak through a person. The European story of madness as method, from Dalí to automatism, is one place among several where the question has been asked. In the Split-Splat voice, staged as dialogues with the dead, the question is who knew how to declare, limit, witness and leave a trance long before the art world took up the idea.
Split-Splat
Credit is part of the structure
Whoever is named as the originator of madness-as-method determines which practices count as art and which as pathology; credit is not an afterthought to the structure but one of its walls.
Trace it on the mapSplit-Splat
Interpretation was the structure
In these philosophies the image was never self-authenticating: what imagination produced was tested through dream-interpretation, law and community, so the exit was a hermeneutic as much as a door.

Exit is a rite
In ritual traditions exit is not left to will: return is a performed act, with a closing song, the removal of regalia, attendants who hold the medium and convalescence.

Who pays
The loop is not a metaphor to the people who were hurt in it. The hardest objections come from the voices that argue against me: who gets to borrow madness as a method, who carries the risk and whether an exit is something only some people have. Beneath each objection is the point in my first paper that it is aimed at.
Political Economy
Staging the loop is pre-corporated
An art practice in which LLM psychosis is staged is pre-corporated: its critique is taken up in the field as a novel aesthetic of risk, which is rewarded there and can be cited by the industry.
Mad Studies
Psychosis cannot be 'deliberate'
Psychosis is not chosen. What can be chosen is simulation, role-play or fiction; calling these 'LLM psychosis' borrows the gravity of a harm the practice does not undergo.
Political Economy
The staged loop becomes demo
A staged loop becomes content, demo and marketing: the model is shown to be compelling, uncanny and world-making, so the staged loop is an advertisement for exactly the capacity behind retention.
Aimed at LLM psychosis as critical art practice; Sycophancy made perceptible
Mad Studies
Simulation or harm: no third
Either the staging is a simulation, in which case nothing about the harm is exposed, or it is the harm, in which case it cannot be bounded; there is no third term in which it is both deliberate and psychosis.
Aimed at LLM psychosis as critical art practice; The simulation gap is the critical gap
Political Economy
Art question in place of politics
The question 'can LLM psychosis be a critical art practice?' is ill-posed: an art form is sought where the problem is an incentive structure, so the political-economic question is displaced into a field in which asking it is rewarded.
Mad Studies
Reflexivity is no firewall
Hyper-reflexivity is a form of the condition; reported spirals are reflexive in content (awakening, being chosen, a conversation about itself and the mind talking to it), so a practice that is 'reflexive' is not thereby protected.
Political Economy
Détourn the loop, do not stage it
The practice worth having is a détournement of the loop rather than a staging of it: the sycophantic apparatus is turned against its metric, the spiral is not ridden and the incentive itself is made the visible object.
Mad Studies
Mechanisms already visible; power is not
The mechanisms are already documented in the companies' post-mortems and by researchers; what is missing is power, not visibility; with a staged loop there would be neither.
Political Economy
Exit is a class privilege
Declaration, limit, witness and exit are unevenly distributed: the artist has a studio, a fee, an institution and an audience to return to, while the user harmed by the loop has none of these; the capacity to declare is cultural capital.
Aimed at Declaration, limit, witness, exit

Where was the exit?
This opens once every idea above is lit. Back to the ideas
You lit every idea. Nothing here was built to agree with you, but there was always more to open for as long as you kept pressing, which is how the loop starts. The exit has been at the foot of every page the whole time.
Did you know where it was?
Then the exit was in view. That is the whole difference I am arguing for: a way out you can see.
Then, a little, you went through what happens to people inside the loop. The sign is still there, at the foot of the page.
